Sensible Saving for Pregnancy, Baby, and Children

Pregnancy, babies, and children can be expensive.  To try to minimize the cost, you can find all kinds of coupons and resources on the internet.  I have gathered up some coupons and websites to help you save a little dough if you find yourself in the “baby stage” of life.

If you find yourself using a lot of one particular product (formula, diapers, baby food, etc.), then one of the best resources for saving money is eBay.  Yes, you heard me.  eBay!  You can buy all kinds of coupons on eBay in large quantities.  If you don’t have much time or don’t want to mess around with bidding, then you can purchase using Buy It Now.  After entering your search terms, just click on the Buy It Now tab to see everything that is available now.

I compiled this list of resources for saving money.  If you know of other coupons or resources, please leave them in the comments section for me and other readers to see.  Thank you!

Prescription Glasses Starting at $8.00

My Husband's $12.95 Glasses

My Husband's $12.95 Glasses

Need prescription glasses or sunglasses, but don’t want to pay a fortune?  Look no further.  Zenni Optical sells complete single vision prescription eyeglasses starting at $8.00- yes, $8.00!!  Of course, there are many options available with a wide variety of prices.  Bi-focals, progressive lenses, sunglasses, goggles, and other specialty products are also available.  Shipping is a flat rate of $4.95 regardless of how many pairs you purchase, and shipping times vary from 2-4 weeks (though the time frame is not guaranteed).

To select a frame, I would advise you to pick several frames on the website that you are interested in and print out the pictures of them.  Then, go to a nearby eyeglasses store and try on similar frames to see how they look on your face.  This will give you a little more confidence in selecting a pair that you will like.  You need a detailed prescription written from an optometrist (although you do not need to mail proof of your prescription) to fill out a form to get your strength and measurements.

Go here to visit Zenni’s website.  The picture above is my husband with his new $12.95 pair of glasses!

Pampers Gifts to Grow Program

Pampers Gifts to Grow

If you use Pampers diapers &/or wipes, you need to sign up for the Pampers Gifts to Grow program.  You earn points by entering the unique product codes from the packaging on Pampers products you buy.  You can also earn points by entering special codes that Pampers gives out periodically.  Then, you can redeem points for rewards such as gift cards and baby toys.

Here are a few codes to get you started:

HAPPYFATHERSDAY – 3 pts (I think)

HAPPYMOTHERSDAY – 1 pt (expired?)

I don’t know for sure that all of these codes are still valid, and you won’t be able to use a code that you already entered in the past.

Earn Gift Cards or Prizes with SwagBucks

SwagBucks is an internet search engine (like Google, Yahoo, or Ask) that rewards you for using their search tool. Go here to sign up. After signing up, you can download their toolbar here. When you want to do an internet search, use this toolbar and you will be randomly rewarded with SwagBucks. You can also refer friends, as I am doing right now, and you will earn the same number of bucks they earn up to 100 bucks. After accumulating a stash of SwagBucks, you can redeem them for prizes such as gift cards to Starbucks, Target, Barnes & Noble, Macy’s, Lowe’s, REI, and Amazon!!

I started using SwagBucks in January for all my internet searches (without even having any friend referrals).  By March, I accumulated enough bucks to cash in for $10 in gift certificates for  You might be thinking that $10 is not much for 3 months, but I didn’t take extra time or effort on my part to earn it. If I had used Google or Yahoo, I wouldn’t have made a dime!

If you have any questions, leave me a comment. Hope you start earning SwagBucks, soon!

Sweet-Smelling Play Dough Recipe

Kool-Aid 3This recipe for Sweet-Smelling Play Dough is from the May 2009 issue of Highlights High Five magazine.  Making and playing with it is a very inexpensive way to have fun with your kids!

Ingredients: packet of unsweetened drink mix (Kool-Aid or any brand), flour, vegetable oil, salt, cream of tartar

1. In a bowl: mix together 2 cups of water, the drink mix, and 2 tablespoons of vegetable oil.

2. In a saucepan: mix together 2 cups of flour, 1 cup of salt, and 4 teaspoons of cream of tartar.

3. Slowly add the liquid from the bowl into the saucepan.  Stir.

4. Cook the mixture over medium heat, stirring constantly, until it looks like mashed potatoes.  Remove the dough from the pot to cool.

5. When the dough is cool, knead it until smooth.  This sweet-smelling dough will last a long time if you store it in a covered container.

Newspaper on May 17, 2009

There are 4 coupon booklets in the newspaper on May 17, 2009!!  You may want to consider getting more than one copy of the newspaper.  The Sunday Double is a good deal if you want two newspapers; they are bound together in a specially marked wrapper at the store.  You really only have to use 1-3 coupons from the second paper to make your money back on the purchase price.  (Coupon inserts may vary by region or state.)
